Should You Accept Your Job Offer?

If you have just been offered a new job, congratulations are in order. Interview processes and tough and you’ve done well to get so far. However, you do need to consider very seriously whether or not to accept the new role you have been offered. In the excitement of being offer the position, you may not necessarily have had time to think everything over as carefully as you need to.

Make sure the money is right. Everyone knows how much they need to earn, so if it is not enough, go with your head and not your heart. Don’t accept a lower wage than you are worth.

Check the benefits package as well. There may be good bonuses like private health care or a company car. This could make up for a slightly lower wage than expected, depending on your priorities. Ask about pension contributions and what the company will contribute.

Finding Your First Job After University

When you finish university or college, the next step is to find yourself your first real job. This is a major transitional phase for your career, as you will be going from studying full time and maybe having a part-time job to earn some spending money, to working in a full-time role that is probably around 37-40 hours a week.

Don’t be put off by the fact that it is a major change. Many people will be looking for graduates and actually, it won’t necessarily matter what subject your degree is in. Make sure your CV is up to scratch and begin sending it to recruitment agencies to see what they can offer you.

Whilst you shouldn’t necessarily just take the first job you are offered, you also shouldn’t be put off by taking a more junior role. Many graduates think too much about the bigger picture and look for jobs that meet with all their career dreams and that they could see themselves doing forever. This is unrealistic. Find a job, get some experience and then re-evaluate your options in a year’s time if you want to.

There is no doubt about it – using a recruitment agency will help to make your life easier when you are seeking a new position. The recruiter will do lots of the hard work for you, finding you appropriate jobs and arranging interviews on your behalf. It’s important you work with the right person, so here are some tips to help you:

  1. Look online. Most professional recruiters will be online now, so by searching for them there, you can have access to many different agencies.
  2. Meet them in person. Reputable agencies will usually want to meet you in person – if they don’t, maybe ask yourself if they are the right agency for you as they won’t be able to make such accurate matches.
  3. Find an industry-specific recruiter. This will mean that they have the most specifically-targeted positions for you.

Are You Happy in Your Job?

Many people say that you do not have to be happy in a job and that you have to go regardless as whether you enjoy it or not, but job satisfaction can be extremely important.

If you are in a current job role, where you do not enjoy most of your day, a lot of the time then I would definitely say it’s time for a change. This may mean a change of job or simply a change of your working.

Firstly you need to find out what is making you unhappy. Is it the working hours, travelling to work or the people you work with? Once you know this you can then start to consider how and if you can improve your situation.

It may be that you need to arrange a sit down with your lime manager to discuss your concerns and issues, but ideally do not just go to them with problems, but offer reasonable solutions too.

 

A Change in Career

If you have been in the same type of job role for a number of years, there may come a time when you fancy a change or that a change is essential. It can be hard to know what sort of jobs to look for if you have little or no experience in any other field other than the one you currently work in.

Following the recession, many people were made redundant and there was a shortage of jobs. This is slowly picking back up and more and more jobs are becoming available but still you may find that people with relevant qualifications and / or experience are often offered the job over you. If you can, you may need to go back in to education or find a job that offers full training. This often comes with a pay drop but if you are confident that you want to work in that industry then it is sometimes worthwhile dropping down on your money and think about the long term rewards you can get from a change in career.

 

Job Satisfaction Importance

Many of us do not really enjoy our work. Often we will say that we only go because we need to earn the money but enjoying your job can not only make your day to day life more pleasant but can make you more proactive at work and also improve your overall quality of life. We spend a large percentage of our life at work, so finding a job that you really enjoy is not only a bonus, but I believe essential. It may be that you have to take a job that you do not have an interest in as you need work quickly or whilst you are training for another career.

Job satisfaction can be obtained in several ways. It may be that you get satisfaction out of fixing or repairing something or that you enjoy talking to customers and helping them make a choice about a product they need. If you do not currently enjoy your job, make a list of reasons why. If the list contains many elements that you cannot change then it may be time for a new career or at least a different employer.
